Clermont Coal Project
The Clermont coal deposit, located near the township of Clermont in central Queensland, holds 177 million tonnes of thermal coal and has an expected life of 17 years. The mine site is owned and operated by Rio Tinto Coal Pty Ltd, one of Australia's leading mining organisations, with a successful record in the development of open cut and underground coal operations.
EARLY EARTHWORKS (GREENFIELDS) CONTRACT
Clermont started as a relatively small project for BGC and through repeat business and contract extensions, grew by a significant amount.
BGC Contracting were contracted to progress the earthworks for the greenfields site to establish the Claremont mine.
The package involved early earthworks and civil work for the development of the site, including the construction of light vehicle roads and heavy vehicle haul roads, stormwater drainage, mining equipment laydown pads and explosive pads.
ON-SITE CIVIL WORKS
The initial $15 million earthworks contract was then extended to include further on-site civil works, taking the total value to $48 million. Encompassing packages A010, A050 and A070, BGC undertook additional earthworks including hardstands, process water dam, mine water dam and 3 sedimentation dams. The civil components completed by BGC entailed the construction of the Mine Industrial Area (MIA) and the Run of Mine (ROM) retaining wall and pads.
OVERLAND CONVEYOR CONTRACT
Following the group’s notable quality performance on the existing civil works contract for Clermont Project, Rio Tinto Coal awarded BGC a third contract to continue civil construction for overland conveyors. The work under this contract consisted of all earthwork and civil work necessary to establish the formation for a 13.4km overland conveyor, which runs between the Clermont Coal Mine and Blair Athol Coal Mine. The scope involved the conveyor track formation, service road construction, a large RCBC rail haul road underpass, machinery crossing for farmer’s, road crossing, piling, large scale pipe culverts and associated concrete works.
Clermont started as a relatively small project for BGC and through repeat business and contract extensions, grew by a significant amount. The total contract value at the completion of all works for the Clermont Coal Project was in the vicinity of $75 million.
