The Spinifex Ridge Iron Ore project is located approximately 170km South East of Port Hedland in Western Australia.
The project uses conventional open pit mining techniques including pre-stripping topsoil, ramp construction, drilling, blasting and load and haul of direct shipping iron ore to the run of mine (ROM) and waste to the dump.
BGC’s involvement in Spinifex Ridge has developed from its initial project scope right through to life of mine completion.
BGC’s involvement in Spinifex Ridge has developed from its initial project scope right through to life of mine completion. What also makes this project unique in nature is that it has been managed by BGC over the project life cycle via two different mine owners, having originally been owned by Moly Mines, followed by eventual ownership by Process Minerals International.
The scope of work involves the removal of 7.2 million bank cubic metres of ore and waste. The pits currently producing iron ore at Spinifex Ridge are the Gallifrey, Dalek, Auton North East and the Auton open cuts.
Throughout the initial stages of production at Spinifex Ridge the mining operations were carried out with only a day shift workforce. This single shift has been able to keep ahead of the set shipping schedule thus allowing BGC to increase project efficiencies.
