Northam Bypass

Since 1988, BGC Contracting has enjoyed a strong working relationship with Main Roads WA, constructing some of Western Australia’s major road networks and bridges.

NORTHAM BYPASS CONTRACT

BGC Contracting, in a joint venture with Barclay Mowlem, was awarded the $40 million contract to construct the Northam Bypass.

The Northam Bypass Project involved the construction of 9 bridges and 16kms of road. The route ran over a rugged greenfields site with 3 major river crossings, 2 rail crossings and 4 main road crossings.

A wide variety of bridge types were used to suit conditions and meet client requirements. Incremental launch decks were selected for the 2 largest river bridges. A 4-day cycle time was achieved for the incremental launches, a record for WA bridge construction.

The road involved earthworks included major cuts up to 10m deep requiring drill and blast. Sidetracks were provided to manage traffic at the 3 major road crossings with tie-ins at either end.

The impact of construction on the local community was minimised through regular consultation and communication. BGC enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the community and contributed to various local community groups, maintaining excellent community relations throughout the life of the project. All work was completed with minimal impact to the surrounding environment and species of local botanical provenance were selected for landscaping and revegetation.

BGC was also involved in Aboriginal Heritage Management during the project. The western 2km of the project originally ran close to and over a number of significant sights. As a result the road was realigned to miss these sites. Close collaboration was carried out with local Aboriginal representatives, particularly in the Avon and Mortlock river areas. The bypass road had three bridges over these rivers and the local community representatives were called to review, inspect and control clearing, excavations and fill works in these areas.

Apart from the Northam Bypass, the Great Northern Highway project, Term Asset contract one and Term Network contracts one and two are further demonstrations of successful scopes of work that BGC Contracting have been awarded with Main Roads WA.
