Koolan Island Project

The Koolan Island hematite mining operation is located approximately 140km north of Derby and 1km off the Kimberly coast (next to Cockatoo Island). Koolan iron ore is a very high quality ore which is low in impurities.

BGC Contracting effectively managed these obstacles to mine a total of 59 million bcm of ore and waste material through a workforce of 250 personnel.

CONTRACT MINING

BGC Contracting secured the mining contract, to the value of $385 million, for Koolan Island operation. Providing the full scope of services from start-up, the contract also covered the construction of workshops, fuel facilities, barge landing, ROM, roads, ramps, and environmental facilities.

Mining commenced with ore from satellite ore bodies Eastern, Mullet and Main Pit West, with an average haul distance of 3.5 km. The Mining component was later extended to Barramundi West and Acacia.

The isolated nature of this location presented several obstacles that had to be addressed in order to deliver the project successfully. This included logistics, excessive ground water, torrential tropical rain and mine road inaccessibility during cyclone season.

BGC Contracting effectively managed these obstacles to mine a total of 59 million bcm of ore and waste material through a workforce of 250 personnel.
