BGC Contracting Sponsors 'MATES in Construction'
On Friday, 20 March 2015, BGC Contracting were gold sponsors of the MATES in Construction annual fundraising lunch, which seeks to raise funds and awareness for people dealing with debilitating mental health issues in the workplace. The event touched on some very important issues but none other than the fact that suicide can be prevented and mental health issues can be treated. This is an industry led approach to an industry-wide problem.
We are continually growing our partnership with Mates in Construction (MIC).
In the past year, 4 of our sites have now been accredited as MIC sites with over 1000 employees going through their awareness training program. The partnership with MIC is an important part of our commitment to health and wellbeing in the workplace. This partnership in conjunction with our partnership with FIFO Families now provides an overall support framework for those working on our sites and just as importantly those families left at home.
To quote some statistics to highlight the growing issue of mental health in the workplace:
- 1 in 5 Australians experience some form of mental illness each year (most commonly depression and anxiety);
- Of those people over 65% of them will NOT access (or have access to) any treatment for these illnesses; and
- Annually, suicide is the biggest single killer of Australian men aged under 45. This is now much higher than the Australian road death toll.
BGC Contracting will continue to support MIC in the hopes we can make a difference in this space going forward.
