BGC Contracting Awarded City of Karratha Foreshore Development
Leading Australian mining and civil construction firm BGC Contracting have been awarded a package of infrastructure works by the City of Karratha.
Works will commence this month on revitalising foreshore amenities in Dampier including constructing new public walkways and picnic areas along The Esplanade and a permanent movie screen at Hampton Oval.
BGC Contracting will be utilising local contractors to carry out civil works, partnering with locally owned indigenous company Yurra to deliver the landscaping component of the project.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the $2 million project would significantly enhance key public areas along the Dampier foreshore.
“The Dampier beachfront is extremely popular with the community and visitors. Ensuring we have the appropriate infrastructure in place to enhance the experience for residents and tourists while protecting our coastline is a high priority for Council,” Cr Long said.
“The improvements form the first on the ground works of the Dampier Town Site and Foreshore Management Plan which aims to enhance key areas of public use within Dampier.”
The first stage of works will be jointly funded through the City’s community partnership with Rio Tinto.
Rio Tinto Dampier Port Operations Manager, Nate Foster said that Rio Tinto is proud to support the Dampier beautification project through our partnership with the City of Karratha.
“This is a great project and the community have every right to be excited’, said Mr Foster.
Further Dampier Townsite and Foreshore works identified under the plan will be incorporated into the City’s Long Term Financial Plan to be rolled out in future years.
The City is undertaking similar foreshore enhancement projects in Points Samson and Karratha.
