BGC Contracting Awarded ECI Contract with Atlas Iron
BGC Contracting has been awarded an Early Contractor Involvement contract for the Roads and Crossings Package for Atlas Iron’s Turner River Hub development.
The Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) style contract involves the construction of around 100km of unsealed haul roads and has an estimated value of $80 million.
The project will link the Wodgina Iron Ore Project and a further 2 new mine operations with a central ore processing hub at Turner River, and the 100km link to Port Hedland. The scope also includes up to 4 bridges over existing road and rail alignments.
Atlas Iron already has two operations exporting direct shipping iron ore in the Port Hedland area, with Abydos and Mt Webber to still to commence. Together these mines will produce 12 million tonnes of iron ore for export by 2012. BGC Contracting already has a mining contract with Atlas at its Wodgina project.
This is the first time Atlas Iron has considered Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) arrangement. BGC Contracting does have ECI experience, previously delivering the Great Northern Highway Kimberley Project for Main Roads WA under an ECI arrangement.
Greg Heylen, Executive General Manager Civil said “Through our hard work at Wodgina we have established a strong relationship with Atlas Iron. They are on an aggressive growth path and I am confident that this award will be the start of further ongoing work for Atlas Iron”.
The scope and price will be developed during a 3 month ECI Phase with construction planned over 18 months commencing July 2011.
